The other component is the alternator, a tiny electric generator that’s run by the serpentine belt. The alternator has two functions. First, it keeps the battery charged. Second, when the engine is running, it’s actually the alternator that runs all the electronics. The voltage regulator which is internal to the alternator uses a grounding system to regulate output voltage. In other words as the voltage goes high it uses contacts that send it to ground. If these contacts stick it sends battery voltage to ground all the time, hence HOT feel to alternator. Usually kills a battery. Philip AdministratorCheck out our one wire alternator conversion guide.
